Privacy Policy
The short version
- Lockdown does not collect any personal data. Nothing you do in the app is sent to us. If you join a study circle, the friends in it see your name and study times, through your iCloud.
- There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking.
- Your settings and session history are stored on your iPhone, and you can delete them at any time.
- Apple keeps the apps you choose to block private, even from Lockdown.
This Privacy Policy explains how the Lockdown iPhone app (the "App") and this website handle information. It applies to the App, its widgets and Live Activity, and its Screen Time extensions.
1. Who we are
Lockdown is developed and published by Neel Sharma ("we", "us" or "our"). For anything related to privacy, you can reach us at neelksharma13@gmail.com.
2. Information we collect
We do not collect, store, sell or share any personal information. The App has no user accounts of its own, makes no network requests except to Apple's iCloud for the optional study circles described in section 3, and contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking software. We never receive the information you enter into the App.
Because the App does not collect data, its App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected", and it does not use Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt because it does not track you.
3. Information stored only on your device
To work, the App keeps a small amount of information locally on your iPhone, inside the App's private storage (an App Group container shared only with Lockdown's own extensions):
- What you're working on, the optional text you type before a session (for example, "Biology").
- Session details: start time, planned end time, actual end time and whether a session was completed or ended early.
- Preferences, such as default duration, Strict sessions, hiding the countdown, haptics, Live Activity and notification settings.
- Your app selection, stored as opaque tokens provided by Apple (see section 4).
Apart from study circles, described below, this information never leaves your device through Lockdown. It may be included in your device backups (iCloud or computer), which are handled by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy. You can delete your session history in the App under Settings › Delete History, and deleting the App removes all of its data from your iPhone.
Study circles (optional). If you create or join a study circle, Lockdown uses Apple's CloudKit to keep the circle in iCloud. A circle you create is stored in your iCloud account, and a circle you join is stored in its creator's. Lockdown has no server of its own. The other people in the circle can see:
- the name you choose for circles;
- whether you're in a session right now, and when it ends;
- what you're working on, only if you turn on "Show what I'm working on";
- your minutes protected this week, your streak, and when your last session started;
- the last nudge you sent to someone in the circle, and when;
- the circle's weekly goal, which anyone in it can set.
- the circle's weekly group session (days, start time and length), if someone sets one up. Each member's iPhone schedules its own local reminder for it.
To tell you when friends lock in or nudge you, iCloud sends your iPhone a silent push when a circle changes. Lockdown then shows a notification on your iPhone. You can turn each kind off in the App under Circles. The Circles widget shows the same information from your iPhone's copy.
Circles never receive your app selection, your session history or your settings. Anyone with a circle's invite link can join it, so share the link only with people you want in the circle. Leaving a circle removes your entry from it. Deleting a circle you created removes it for everyone. iCloud storage is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy.
4. Screen Time and Family Controls
Lockdown uses Apple's Screen Time frameworks (Family Controls, Managed Settings and Device Activity) to close the apps you choose during a session. When you grant Screen Time access, you authorize the App on your own device. You can withdraw that permission at any time in Settings › Screen Time, which immediately removes every restriction Lockdown has applied.
When you pick apps, categories or websites to block, Apple gives Lockdown only opaque tokens. Lockdown can ask iOS to display their names and icons on your screen, but the App itself cannot see which apps or websites they are, and it cannot see how you use them. Lockdown does not access your Screen Time usage reports.
5. Notifications and Live Activities
If you allow notifications, Lockdown schedules local notifications on your iPhone, for example to tell you when a session has ended. Live Activities on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island are drawn by iOS from the session's start and end times. Neither uses a server or push service operated by us.
6. Third parties
The App contains no third-party SDKs and shares no data with third parties. The App is distributed by Apple through the App Store. Apple may collect information about your download and use of apps under Apple's Privacy Policy, and any analytics you choose to share with app developers through iOS settings are governed by Apple.
7. Children's privacy
Lockdown is a study tool that may be used by students of any age. Because the App does not collect personal information from anyone, it does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). If you believe a child has sent us personal information, for example by email, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, laws such as the GDPR, UK GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act give you rights to access, correct, delete or port your personal data, and to object to certain processing. Because we do not hold personal data from the App, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete on our side; all App data stays on your device and is under your control. If you email us, we will use your message only to reply, and we will delete it on request.
9. This website
This website does not use cookies, analytics or advertising. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, and GitHub may log technical information such as IP addresses for security and operational purposes, as described in GitHub's Privacy Statement.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change how the App handles information, we will update this policy and the "last updated" date above. If a change is significant, for example if the App ever begins to collect data, we will explain it clearly in the App or on this page before it takes effect.
